Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells made to replicate the natural look of your teeth. Dr. Day custom-fits each veneer to the individual teeth in your mouth, then bonds the veneers to your existing teeth. Veneers correct imperfections such as misshapen teeth, stains, cracks, or gaps. They likewise help fortify frail teeth.

Veneers can be constructed out of resin composite materials, but porcelain is the most stain-resistant material. Porcelain also tends to look more like your natural enamel. Dr. Day reviews your options and recommends the best type of veneers for your specific needs.

There are several different types of veneers that Austin Smiles by Day offers, including:

Porcelain

Porcelain veneers are made out of paper-thin porcelain that can conceal tooth imperfections and blend in with the rest of your natural teeth seamlessly. They create a very durable, yet natural look for your smile.

LumineersĀ®

Lumineers are porcelain veneers that offer many of the same advantages as traditional porcelain veneers. Unlike traditional alternatives, however, Lumineers require virtually no tooth preparation, which preserves your entire natural tooth. They are also made out of CerinateĀ® ceramic, which is even thinner than the material used in traditional veneers.

What is the process of getting veneers?

After an initial consultation to discuss the type of veneers that are best for your teeth and the results you hope to achieve, you return for a follow-up appointment. At this appointment, Dr. Day takes off a minuscule amount of enamel from the surface of your existing teeth to shape them in preparation for the veneers. Once your teeth are prepared, she makes an impression of your teeth so the dental lab can create custom veneers that are an exact fit for your mouth.

When the veneers arrive from the lab, you return to the office and have them custom-fitted to each of your teeth. After cleaning and etching the surface of your teeth to prepare them for the bonding process, Dr. Day applies a special cement and light source that causes the adhesive to bond securely to the porcelain. In no time your veneers are permanently in place, and you have a new and improved smile!

What are some advantages of veneers?

Veneers are a natural-looking means to correct misshapen, cracked, or crooked teeth. Also, they provide the following benefits:

  • Resistance to stains
  • Well-tolerated by your gums
  • Can lighten darker teeth
  • Aesthetically pleasing with minimal dental work
  • Strengthen teeth
  • Less expensive than some other dental procedures like crowns
