Emergency Dentist Q & A

What is emergency dental care?

Emergency dentists treat oral injuries and pain that need to be fixed or addressed immediately. A good many dental emergencies are situations that involve saving broken or knocked-out teeth. Coming into Austin Smiles By Day within 30 minutes of your mouth or tooth injury can mean the difference between saving and losing your tooth.

Is it a dental emergency?

If you're worried about a severe mouth injury you or a family member has sustained, it's the right time to call an emergency dentist. Immediate treatment calls for immediate action. Some situations that are considered dental emergencies include:

  • Infection
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • A loose permanent tooth
  • Intense tooth or mouth pain
  • Bleeding inside your mouth from your cheeks, tongue, or gums
  • Trauma to your face or mouth
  • Swelling in your mouth, gums, or tongue
  • A severely cracked or broken tooth
  • A cut or tear on your lips

Chipping a tooth in and of itself doesn't always warrant emergency dental care. If the tooth is chipped, but it doesn't appear as if you'll lose the tooth entirely, it's probably not a dental emergency. Even so, you can't go wrong by calling Dr. Day. She’s trained to handle dental emergencies and can walk you through what to do with your tooth until you can visit the office.

How do I care for a knocked-out tooth?

A knocked-out tooth is no laughing matter. It's one of the most severe dental emergencies. If you don’t receive immediate dental care, you may be at risk of losing the tooth. Do your best to rinse your mouth and the damaged tooth. Rinse your mouth and tooth with warm water, being careful not to touch the tooth by the roots.

As you rinse the tooth, hold it by the top part (the crown). If you can, hold the cleaned tooth by the crown and reinsert it into the empty socket. Close your mouth and bite down gently on the tooth, if you can. It might help to bite down on a soft piece of gauze until you can visit Austin Smiles By Day. Call the office right away to explain the situation, or have a loved one call for you. If the tooth can't be replaced in the empty socket, place it in a small cup of cold milk. The milk will help preserve the roots until you can make it into the office.

In the event of a dental emergency, call Austin Smiles By Day for expert assistance.
